International Women’s Day: Global Interviews
15 March, 2019
For International Women’s Day we have spoken to 5 women across our global agency. From our London office we spoke to Nikita Patel, Associate Director – Biddable, and Zoe Bloom, Associate Business Analyst. From America we spoke to Rotem Rusak, Marketing Coordinator in our New York office, and Laura Hudson, VP – Americas in our LA office. Finally, we spoke to Vitya Vijayan, Senior Account Manager in our Singapore office.
What does international women’s day mean to you?
To me International Women’s Day means an opportunity to both celebrate and empower women. More than ever, women have a lot of doors open to them, but it’s important to take a moment and remember there is still far to go, while supporting each other and celebrating how amazing, loving, powerful, and inspirational women are – Rotem
Especially with this year’s theme #BalanceForBetter, gender inequality moves away from simply being a ‘woman’s issue’ to a ‘business issue’ that must be addressed in order to ensure a gender balance in the workplace – Zoe
What role or impact would you like to make on the issue of women’s rights?
Inequality would be the area of focus for me. If one has the determination, all you need is opportunity but there are places where women are deprived of such opportunities due to gender role stereotypes – Vitya
I think there are a lot of preconceived notions that are attached to being a woman, and it’s every women’s chief right to be herself, regardless of cultural or societal norms. Every person should have the chance to get where they dream of being and I hope to improve that possibility for women everywhere – Rotem
What are challenges faced by women in business?
Women can be seen as softer, but they should feel confident to be assertive and not be afraid to have their opinions heard. If people aren’t listening, make them listen – Nikita
I think most women at work, particularly when they’re younger, have been in meeting situations where other men automatically take male colleagues more seriously despite the fact you may both be saying the same thing. It’s disappointing that gender can still be a disadvantage to getting your points across and being heard – Laura
Underestimation; particularly in the workplace. I think some really underestimate women’s capabilities which can have a knock-on effect with regards to women having the confidence to speak up, propose ideas and find their voice in the business world. There have been times where I’ve known the answer or had an idea and yet still sat quietly in a meeting for fear of looking ‘stupid’ and reinforcing said stereotypes – Zoe
What advice would you give to a woman about to start her career in this industry?
I just think you have got to find something you enjoy doing and you are good at and you should be fine. Never second guess yourself or your decisions. Always trust your judgement and always have an opinion – Vitya
People want to see your personality and hear your thoughts, no matter age or gender, because ideas are always valuable no matter who they’re coming from – Nikita
The wonderful thing about being in an industry that’s grown and continues to evolve as fast as ours, is that there’s no shortage of opportunity for anyone who’s willing to work hard. During my years at M&C Saatchi Performance in particular, I’m fortunate to have been given a huge amount of opportunity and career support – Laura
What future do you see for women in digital advertising?
Throughout my own career I’ve noticed a positive shift in gender ratios. I was initially the only female in the first digital team I joined in 2008. Whereas these days there’s a good gender balance and there seems to be a growing number of women holding senior positions on all sides of the industry – Laura
I like being underestimated because I like proving people wrong, as I continue my career there will always be opportunities to prove myself, and I look forward to doing just that – Nikita
